Well we just survived our second day in Madrid and this one felt just as long as the first! We started the day by going to the EUSA office and talking about our internships. I have an awesome internship and am incredibly excited about it. I am going to work with kids in a summer school/day camp/day care sort of situation. It is the first choice that Nuria and I discussed and she was able to set it up for me. We start on June 4 after we take 3 weeks of a language class in el Instituto Don Quijote. I am not very excited about taking the language class especially because we have to take a placement test on Monday to see what class we will be in. However, the internship is right up my alley and I am thrilled to be able to work with kids for the summer.
After our internship meeting we walked around with Almendra and Caitlin (managers from our EUSA program). They showed us all of the main areas of Madrid like La Calle Gran Via (similar to the New York Times Square), La Plaza Mayor, and lots of other places. We were able to learn a lot about Madrid and learn some key places that we need know about to buy things during our stay. We also drove around on a double decker bus and got to see some amazing sites around Madrid.
The Madrileno schedule here is incredibly different from the one at home. Here the workday doesn’t really start until 9ish at the earliest. So after eating breakfast at 8:30ish, you can “re-breakfast” at around 11. This is because breakfast is a very light meal normally consisting of only toast and coffee. The “rebreakfast” normally is coffee and a pastry of some sort. At 3:00 they eat lunch here and it is the biggest meal of the day. Then at 8/9 it is time for dinner. The craziest part about all of this though is that there is an INSANE night life in Madrid. There is always a party going on and there are thousands and thousands of bars all over the place. Almendra told us that there is 1 bar for every 4 people in Spain. The discotecas don’t really become popular until 3 in the morning and the madrilenos will party until 6 or 7 in the morning. The phrase, “We’ll sleep when we’re dead” fits in perfectly with this city. It is nuts.
The three girls have learned that we are very happy to have Nik with us when we go out. When we were at a club a fight was about to break out when Nik threw his hands out to protect us and then grabbed us and ran out of there as soon as we could. We all agreed that it is great to have him with us when we go out at night. Javier is also extremely helpful and since he is bilingual he directs us all around Madrid and takes care of us. In short, we girls lucked out and got 2 gentlemen to come on the trip with us. It is so cool that our group gets along so well.
